Niche in town

Source: Fiji Times (Original Article)

NOT much has been happening in Fiji’s small business economy especially in terms of starting, let alone running, new businesses.

One of the reasons, they say, is the impact of the world economic recession of late.

From Wall Street to the very primitive Fijian businesses, most in the money trade lacked the nerve to just hang on and wait for an economic boom.

Most that had opted out were breaking-even and are now missing out completely.

But for a small entrepreneur in uptown Toorak in Suva, Kalisi Ratuwara proves that tough only gets tougher for those that were meant to survive.

“That’s how I see it. And for me, the purpose of any downturn is to realign and rerun our business to suit the demand and policies that control our activities,” she said.

Mrs Ratuwara is the sole proprietor of Cara’s Immigration Consultancy Services.

She was born and bred in her home village of Karoko in Vanua Levu and had her secondary education at Savusavu and Niusawa Secondary schools in the north before she moved to Nausori to complete her Form 7 at Vunimono.

In 1991, she joined the Ministry of Agriculture in Suva as a clerk and moved on from there to the Human Resource Section.

She then joined their accounts section which prompted her to complete her Diploma in Business Accounting from the Fiji Institute of Technology – now known as the Fiji National University.

At present, she has a few more units to complete her Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting and management at the University of the South Pacific.

In 2005, she moved on to join Immigration New Zealand in Suva.

While there, she was trained as a visa officer and as a border security officer as well as to be able to verify documents and procedures needed by the New Zealand government’s immigration service.

That is what this 36-year-old from Cakaudrove has been doing with her baby – Cara’s Immigration flights from Darwin to Sydney Consultancy – since it began in 2007.
